Despair.nuThe Cute & the Scary
I’m working on a new drawing for an experimental manga publication (
I can’t disclose a title). The main illustrator is confined in the hospital so I’m filling in for him. He won’t be able to make the deadline. I’m the fallback
but still, it’s a good start.
Now, I’m stuck… The subject is a
fairy prince. He’s supposed to be leaning casually on a gargoyle. The costume (definitely leather) will come to me
. But the gargoyle is a different matter. I Googled for inspiration but the search turned up numerous options that I couldn’t decide which one is best.
Which one?
Anyhoodles, I was ecstatic
when I received Brian Jacques & Christopher Denise’s "The Great Redwall Feast" in the mail. Brian Jacques is the renowned author of the Redwall novel series. Christopher Denise is his preferred illustrator for a number of special picture book publications. To my understanding, Denise is fresh in the book illustration business but his visual interpretation of Jacques’ writing is so impressive that I’m sure he will be as renowned as Jacques very soon
! Here are scans of the book… Do take a look & I’m sure you’ll understand what I mean!

Congrats on the project, the fairy-man is starting to look awesome 8D What if he had crazy, curly, flowing hair. Lol. For the gargoyles, I really love the webbed mane detail on the second one but I also adore the wings on the first gargoyle. They remind me of the gargoyle statues in The Humpback of Notre-Dame (the animated movie).
The mouse looks adorable on the book cover (: I also really like the page with the animals on the ladder.
